in the middle of the night. abc's john schriffen is on the story. john, good morning. >> reporter: dan, good morning. our affiliate wrtv is now reporting at least two people are dead, eight others injured. the blast rocked the neighborhood when many were asleep forced to quickly grab their pets and flee in their pajamas. authorities have been using searchlights going door to door to see if the number of victims will grow. those at the scene say it looked like a war zone. a deafening explosion late saturday night left this quiet suburban neighborhood up in flames. two houses leveled. two others set ablaze and around 200 people forced from their homes. the scene, collapsed walls, shattered windows and metal from cars melted. the blast could be heard from miles around compelling neighbors to jump into action. >> as soon as i got to the house and i heard those people screaming, the only thing i could think was, these people have to get out or they're not going to make it. i just ran in, not even thinking, me and andrew and pulled them out as fast as i could. >> reporter: the shock waves blew out

. >> reporter: in his previous efforts to strike a so-called grand bargain with speaker of the house john boehner, the president proposed $800 billion in new tax revenues. but now, he is seeking twice that. $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next ten years. that's a bitter pill for republicans to swallow. speaker boehner has called raising tax rates on anybody unacceptable. but he hasn't ruled out limiting deductions and closing loopholes. and that could be the outline of a possible deal. >> if you looked closely at what the president had to say, looked closely at what i have had to say, there are no barriers here to sitting down and beginning to work through this process. >> reporter: but if they don't come to a resolution, beginning january 1st, the economy could be thrown back into recession. and households making $70,000 a year could see their taxes increase over $4,000. the president said he is open to new ideas. and if republicans have a way to raise taxes on the wealthy without raising rates, he wouldn't slam the door on them. george? >> the dancing begins. jon, thanks very much.

's john schriffen is there right now with the latest on the investigation. good morning, john. >> reporter: josh, good morning. there is a large police presence as investigators try to figure out just how this happened. right now, nothing has been ruled out, but investigators are puzzled. because so far there has been no sign of gas leak in the neighborhood. this video shows a massive inferno sparked by the explosion that rocked this indianapolis neighborhood late saturday reportedly killing husband and wife dion and jenniferlo longworth, injuring seven others. >> garage doors blown in. windows blown in, houses leveled. nothing left. >> reporter: this morning, authorities are trying to figure out what touched off the blast which could be heard for miles. >> we can't speculate on what the cause of the blast was, whether natural gas or some other source. >> reporter: witnesses say it happened around 11:00 p.m., more than 100 firefighters responded to the scene at nearly 200 residents quickly ran into nearby streets. >> it splintered my door. it was like a war zone. >> doors what falling down
